Bikram Yoga Baltimore

Staff

Bikram Yoga Baltimore was founded in Cockeysville in 2002. It was the first certified Bikram Yoga studio in the state of Maryland. The studio, and the Baltimore area's love for Bikram Yoga, has been growing ever since. The opening of our location in downtown Baltimore's Harbor East neighborhood is an exciting, long-awaited addition.

The staff of Bikram Yoga Baltimore are all certified Bikram Yoga teachers. Bikram's Teacher Training is an intense, comprehensive program of over 500 hours, covering the asanas (postures) of Bikram's Beginning Yoga Class, anatomy, therapeutic applications, and health benefits of yoga. Teachers learn directly from Bikram Choudhury, founder of Bikram Yoga, which is a rare and extremely valuable aspect of the training. With Bikram Yoga, you can rest assured that you are receiving a consistent, quality yoga experience every time.

Emily and Eddie Garner, Directors

Emily and Eddie took over management of Bikram Yoga Baltimore in 2005, and took complete ownership of the studio in 2007. The studio continues to grow under their management. They both thank all of the many amazing students who have made them part of their families in Baltimore.

Emily discovered Bikram Yoga shortly after moving to New York City in fall 2004, and immediately fell in love with the practice for its healing results on her achy dancer's body, mind, and spirit. A ballet dancer for as long as she can remember, Emily received her B.S. in Arts Administration with a Dance Concentration and a Business Administration minor at Butler University, where she danced with the Butler Ballet, Indianapolis Opera (how she met her wonderful husband), and Dance Kaleidoscope. After her graduation, she and her then-fiance moved to New York, where she continued to dance. Bikram Yoga was a natural transition from her dance career—the physical awareness and knowledge of the body she gained from dancing is a great asset for teaching.

After completing her Bikram Yoga teacher training certification in June 2005, Emily immediately started teaching at all three locations of Bikram Yoga NYC. She is grateful to have grown as a teacher and practitioner in New York, under the guidance of the many great teachers there.

Originally from Western Maryland, Emily is now happy to be closer to home. She is excited to bring her experience to the students at Bikram Yoga Baltimore. Her favorite part of teaching is watching students make amazing changes day by day. . . especially when someone says they can't do something and then proceeds to surprise themselves by doing exactly what they thought they couldn't. Imagine what else we can all do. . .

Emily looks forward to sharing the great rewards of this practice—peace, health, self-awareness, balance—with more and more people.

Eddie started practicing Bikram Yoga in New York City in October 2004. Having moved to the city to pursue an operatic career, Eddie immediately fell in love with the challenge and stress relief that Bikram provided him. He became part of the workstudy program at Bikram Yoga NYC, and his practice and experience quickly progressed with the completion of a 60-day challenge (What else would you do while your fiance was at Bikram's Teacher Training?).

Originally from Raleigh, NC, Eddie has studied music and opera and has completed Bachelor's and Master's degrees at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and the Boston Conservatory, respectively. He has worked with several large-scale opera companies, including Indianapolis Opera's production of Romeo and Juliet, where Eddie the singer met Emily the dancer during rehearsals, before they ever became yogis.

Eddie attended the Teacher Training at Bikram's Yoga College of India, Los Angeles, in Spring 2006. He throws all his energy into helping the students at BYB grow a little bit every day.

Both Emily and Eddie return to Bikram's Teacher Trainings and other seminars regularly, not only to help others learn about Bikram's Beginning Yoga Class, but to continue to learn and grow themselves.

Kyle Kessenich

Raised on Long Island, NY, Kyle Kessenich came to Baltimore in 2002, via Los Angeles, where she worked as a costume designer and then a high school teacher. She started  practicing Bikram yoga on the first day that the Baltimore studio opened. Since then, she has barely missed a day. An admitted gym-rat, Kyle was easily hooked on Bikram’s 26 postures and 2 breathing exercises, finding that it was an intense form of exercise as well as an extremely meditative practice. 5 years later, Kyle decided to go to training, after which she became a full-time yoga instructor.
“I consider myself pretty lucky to be able to do something I love every day, and to share it with others. I have witnessed the transformations this yoga can bring, physically, spiritually, emotionally…”
